This is a large oil painting, measuring 90cm squared, from my on-going collection of Peak District artworks. Walking or running along the bracken-laden Birchen Edge always gives me a sense of exposure, freedom and tranquillity, whatever the season. I hope others can also sense this atmosphere from the painting, which explores the sense of light, perspective and openness. The view of the ochre birch trees and rolling hills are iconic of Derbyshire, and I think a sunset experienced from here is one of the most spectacular. I have climbed some of the bouldering routes along the gritstone edge, as well as on the famous “Three Ships”, which are three granite rocks, named after three of Nelson's ships: Victory, Defiance and Royal Sovereign. I may soon paint a piece that features this monument.
