Embroidery is the craft of decorating fabric or other materials using a needle to apply thread or yarn. It has a long history, with early examples found in China dating back to the Warring States period between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC, and in Sweden from the Viking Age around the 9th and 10th centuries. In Europe, embroidery gained popularity during the Middle Ages with the growth of the Christian church and the rise of royalty. It was also important in the medieval Islamic world, often used to display wealth and social status. In the 18th century, embroidery became a marker of a girl's passage into womanhood and a way to convey rank and social standing in England and its colonies. Today, embroidery is often done using computerized embroidery machines and is used to decorate homes and personalize clothing and other items with brands and logos.
