We visited Florence last year, and it was so wonderful to see the piazzas and cafes filled with people again after the pandemic. I took lots of photos of the famous cathedral, the Duomo, but in the end it was this little side street, leading away from the main square, that caught my eye. I wanted to capture the constant movement of the people milling around the square, so I used a very sketchy approach to drawing the figures. The main subject, however, is the intense heat of the day. I used warm colours - raw umber and burnt sienna - to try and evoke the feeling of heat radiating from the sky and the buildings.
