This painting is loosely based on a photo from Time magazine of a teenage Melanie Griffith at her family home in the 1970s when they owned Neil the Lion. When I encountered these images they resonated deeply with me as I have been painting lions in my work for some time now. The lion first started appearing in my work when I was thinking about threat (and parental anxiety) but also at the same time, protection. I have also been thinking about ownership (of animals, people etc) and also about ownership of images when I find such pictures to work from.
